Why Should You Get Training in Codependence?

Training to become a counselor or group leader to the codependent or the family members of an alcoholic/addict is an important and much-needed area of specialization, both in the professional arena and in the church community. What makes it stand out from other addictions isn’t the immoral or behavioral aspect to it, it’s the deceitfulness of it, making it much more difficult to understand and assess. Most people who suffer from codependence are doing "good things," often things they believe would reflect the general principles of Christianity. But seen closer up, and in context to what’s going on inside their heart, it quickly unfolds as something altogether different from what God intended in relationship styles.

While you may encounter people who "get" codependence, there is a good chance you’ll find more people that are confused by the terminology. In fact, there simply isn’t an easy way to define it: it’s an entire set of mentalities, coping skills and compensation behaviors that attempt to fix, change and balance relationships that are imbalanced.

As we attempt to dig deeper into an explanation - we’ll discover quickly that a person can’t just "snap out of it." The roots of codependence go deep, and are often formed as coping mechanisms early in childhood. Therefore, we can hardly approach codependence as something that could somehow be resolved through the current circumstances the individual is facing (i.e, change the relationship, change the job, etc.).

As counselors/group leaders, we are constantly vacillating between the present realities of the participant's current circumstances, and the past experiences and events that shaped them up to this point. While being overly focused in the past can be negative, only dealing with the "here and now" is like trying to understand someone’s entire "life book" by only reading the cover. The "contents" of their life are what is telling, not just the current circumstances.

That’s why the approach this material has in dealing with codependence requires a dramatic self confrontational process. It a process that asks the participant to evaluate both the current and past systems of love, family, relationship skills, boundaries, etc. The reason? Quite simply, it’s a method of diagnosing the problem in order to properly apply the remedy.

Think of it this way—if we were to get a physical exam by a physician, he would be looking to evaluate if there was something about our health that might be dangerous or a cause for concern. He would base his evaluation of our health on the measurements of what constitutes "normal and healthy." He has the ability to clearly differentiate "healthy" from "unhealthy" based on his own medical understanding. He uses things like our blood work, physical stress tests, and other technology-based diagnostics to evaluate our symptoms and conditions.

Now, imagine if the doctor had no training or understanding of what "normal and healthy" was. It would be disastrous - he wouldn’t be able to help us find the problems or disease that threaten our lives, and therefore we would get sick and possibly even die. That’s why before he even attempts to help others, he needs to get the proper training.

As we answer the calling in our own lives to be equipped, trained and empowered by the Holy Spirit to be Christian counselors, we need both practical understandings as well as in-depth spiritual remedies. We need to be able to "read" the narratives of people’s lives, asking God to begin to sort and sift between the lies and distortions, and the truths of what God says.

While knowledge isn’t everything, it’s always the first start. This book is a tool that can be used along with many others. Of course, our true "tool" as a Christian counselor is simply the Word of God. But through this workbook, it’s our desire that you may learn better the nature of the counselee’s "soul sickness." Understand, it’s not just a matter of diagnosing "symptoms," it’s understanding the deeper spiritual implications in their life such as not trusting and surrendering their will over to the care of God.

What will truly prepare you the most? Your qualification to help walk someone through the bondage of codependence is to assess your own life and relationships, especially your relationship with Jesus Christ. By living, walking and encountering God personally and through the filter of truth, the lies and distortions (the disease of our soul) become easily recognizable. Therefore, when we go through the "diagnostic" tests of the Holy Spirit - we can see (in ourselves and our counselees) how we are sick, so we can ask God to offer us the cure.

The wonderful news about helping people as a spirit-led counselor is that it ultimately isn’t up to us anyways — we are just the Great Physician’s assistants. And even more comforting, He has the tools, equipment, ointments and prescriptions to help someone that is diagnosed with this soul and spiritual condition.

As you begin your training, be willing to allow God to first deal with you—ask Him to show you anything that may be covered under codependence, and be willing to allow God to completely empty you and fill you with His resources.

We look forward to being a part of this journey!
